When you see the beautifully curated images of finished interiors online, what you rarely glimpse are the countless conversations, decisions, and details that bring a design to life. A successful bathroom renovation doesn’t just happen—it’s the result of a thoughtful, structured design process, rooted in understanding the people who will live in the space.

In this post, I’m taking you behind the scenes of one of my projects: the transformation of the principal ensuite in a Victorian home. It’s a perfect example of how careful planning, creativity, and collaboration can turn an awkward cluster of rooms into a serene, spa-like retreat.

The Design Brief: The Ensuite Reimagined in a Victorian Home

My clients—busy professionals in the midst of a long-term Victorian home renovation—wanted to reimagine their principal bedroom and bathroom suite. The existing layout included three outdated, cramped spaces: a separate toilet, bathroom, and airing cupboard.

Their wish was simple in words but complex in delivery: to create a tranquil, luxurious bathroom and dressing area where they could relax and unwind. Storage was also a top priority, as even larger homes can lack clever, tailored solutions.

Where Every Home Renovation Begins

For me, design always starts with people, not products. I begin by asking lots of questions and, more importantly, listening carefully to the answers:

• How do my client’s live day to day?
• What does spending time at home look like after a busy day at work?
• How should the space function when entertaining friends and family?

For this project, inspiration stemmed from my clients’ love of travel—especially their trips to Africa, boutique hotel stays, and passion for safari adventures.

Those early conversations shaped the mood board, which captured the desired atmosphere and essence of the ensuite. This early stage is both creative and practical, acting as a checkpoint to ensure we were aligned before moving into the detailed planning phase.

Planning with Precision: Every Decision Counts

One of the hallmarks of my design process is clarity from the outset. I organise a trade day early on, bringing contractors on-site to discuss the art of the possible. It allows us to problem-solve together, and just as importantly, it enables accurate budget forecasting. No vague estimates—just realistic figures that help my clients make informed choices from day one.

From here, the project becomes a carefully choreographed sequence of decisions. In any renovation, there can be hundreds of them—large and small—and every single one influences the next. From the overall layout to the height of the vanity, the tile finish to the placement of lighting, each choice builds upon the last until the final room emerges fully resolved.

For this ensuite, preliminary floorplans explored various layouts, helping my clients visualise how the new space could function. These sketches evolved into detailed digital product boards, sample presentations, and fully resolved design drawings. Each step provided reassurance that the final bathroom would be both beautiful and practical.

Bathroom Design Details that Matter

Every client brings unique priorities. For this project, one dream was to enjoy a view of the trees while bathing. Another was to incorporate a double sink to ease morning congestion. By carefully repositioning the bath and retaining some original plumbing, we achieved both goals while keeping costs under control.

Though wallpaper is an unexpected choice for a bathroom, I envisioned it from the start—and my clients were excited to embrace it. To ensure durability, we sealed it with a clear matte varnish. Paired with half-height tiling, the wallpaper adds depth and softness without compromising practicality. It elevates the bathroom from purely functional to a space you truly want to linger in.

Smart bathroom storage solutions were also key:

• The old airing cupboard became a tailored dressing area
• Recessed mirrored cabinets provided clever hidden storage
• A large double vanity provided ample room for everyday essentials

The result is a bathroom that feels calm, uncluttered, and beautifully bespoke

The Final Look: A Spa-Like Retreat at Home

The wallpaper’s flowing pattern echoes the movement of trees outside the window, while the colour palette—warm stone tones, soft blacks, and bronze accents—subtly references the African landscape, a place close to my clients’ hearts.

The finished ensuite bathroom and dressing area is not only elegant but also deeply personal. It offers my clients the everyday luxury of stepping into a space designed entirely for them, inspired by their travels and shaped around the realities of their daily lives.

Projects like this don’t succeed by chance. They require time, thought, and a structured design process that balances creativity with practical detail. For busy professionals, this process is invaluable—it saves hours of decision-making, avoids costly mistakes, and ensures clarity around budgets and timelines.
