One of the biggest misconceptions I come across is that creating a home you love means ripping everything out and starting again.
In reality, some of the most successful transformations happen when we resist the temptation to replace everything and instead focus on making smarter design decisions.
Towards the end of last year, I had the pleasure of working with a lovely couple in Shropshire on their kitchen-diner and living room. During our very first conversation they said something I hear all the time:
“Our home just doesn’t feel like us.”
They’d lived in the house for about eight years and still loved the location and generous proportions. But, they’d reached a point where they knew something needed to change. The problem wasn’t a lack of ideas – it was uncertainty around how everything would work together cohesively and anxiety about making expensive mistakes and regretting their choices. So, as is often the case, they had found themselves doing nothing and living with the things that constantly frustrated them.
Before choosing finishes, solve the real problem
As with every project, we started by taking a step back.
Rather than asking which colour cabinets they wanted or what worktops they preferred, we looked at how they actually lived in the space.
Very quickly it became clear that the biggest frustrations weren’t cosmetic at all. They lacked practical storage, and the layout wasn’t supporting the way their family used the rooms day to day.
Once we understood the real problem, the solution became much clearer.
Spending the budget where it matters most
The answer was bespoke joinery.
Custom-built storage would solve the practical issues while creating beautiful focal points that would completely change how both rooms felt.
The challenge, of course, was budget.
Investing in bespoke joinery can quickly consume the available budget, leaving little room for anything else. A brand-new kitchen simply wasn’t realistic.
The good news?
There was nothing wrong with the existing kitchen.
So instead of replacing it, we made a conscious decision to work with what they already had.
The kitchen layout stayed exactly as it was.
The cabinets stayed.
The worktops stayed.
Instead, we refreshed the space with a carefully considered colour palette, updated hardware, new wall tiles, beautiful curtains and blinds, and a completely reimagined lighting scheme that brought warmth and atmosphere into the room.
By carefully editing rather than replacing, we freed up the budget to invest in two stunning pieces of bespoke joinery – one in the dining area and another in the living room.

We designed these two pieces and had them custom made.
These weren’t simply decorative features. They provide generous storage, solve everyday frustrations and create a strong visual connection between the two spaces.
A home that finally feels like them
The result is a home that feels completely transformed without the cost and disruption of a full kitchen renovation.
More importantly, it finally feels personal.
It reflects who they are, supports how they live and has given them spaces they genuinely enjoy spending time in.
As they kindly shared afterwards:
“We worked with Kate on the redesign of our kitchen-diner and living room and the transformation has really changed how much we love and use these spaces. From the beginning she really took the time to understand how we live and what we were drawn to stylistically, then translated that into a scheme that feels calm, cohesive and completely ours.”

Sometimes doing less achieves more
This project is a reminder that good interior design isn’t about spending the biggest budget.
It’s about spending your budget wisely.
Often, the most valuable part of the design process isn’t choosing furniture or paint colours. It’s identifying which decisions will have the biggest impact and which existing features are already doing their job perfectly well.
A fresh pair of experienced eyes can often reveal opportunities you simply can’t see when you’ve lived in a home for years.

Thinking about updating your home?
If you’re considering renovating your kitchen – or refreshing any room in your home, for that matter – it’s worth taking the time to develop a clear plan before diving into decision – making.
A thoughtful design strategy can save you time, money and a great deal of second-guessing. More importantly, it helps ensure every decision contributes towards creating a home that feels calm, connected and unmistakably yours.
After all, transforming your home isn’t always about doing more.
Sometimes it’s simply about doing the right things.
If you’re at the early stages of planning and want clarity on how your home could work before you commit to investing time and money, my Home Design Consultation is designed to give you exactly that.
This focused design session can be used to come up with a realistic strategy for your project, enabling you to move forwards with a clear plan and a greater understanding of the steps required to achieve your goal.
